
This is the fourth and final editorial in our series examining the noise implications of padel courts in the UK, written specifically for developers, planners, operators and consultants involved in the design, assessment and delivery of padel facilities.
In this article, we focus on noise mitigation for padel courts—what works, what does not, and how to approach mitigation in a way that is proportionate, cost effective and aligned with UK planning expectations.
Noise mitigation can be extremely effective when applied correctly. In our experience, the most successful mitigation measures are often also the simplest and lowest cost, particularly when they are considered early in the project lifecycle.
Part 1: Padel vs Tennis: Research into the Comparison of Noise
Noise mitigation is not simply about overcoming planning constraints. While mitigation is often required to support a successful planning application, its longer term value lies in reducing complaint risk and maintaining positive relationships with neighbouring communities.
Padel courts frequently operate close to residential properties, schools, or environmentally sensitive areas. In such locations, mitigation may be required even where courts have been well designed. This can be driven by unusually low background noise levels, elevated receptor positions, or cumulative effects. Understanding what mitigation options exist—and their realistic performance—is essential to delivering viable padel developments.
Design.
Good acoustic outcomes begin with site selection and layout design, not barriers and retrofits. When noise is considered from the outset, many issues can be avoided entirely.
A noise led design approach can reduce or remove the need for additional mitigation, or at the very least clearly identify what will be required at an early stage. This avoids costly redesign, programme delays and reactive solutions following planning objections.
Effective padel court noise design starts with understanding where sound is generated—impact noise, player voices, and reflections—and where it is received.
Simple measures such as orientating courts so that the padel court walls act as acoustic screens, or using existing buildings as shielding, can deliver significant reductions. Padel is a social sport; thoughtful layouts can encourage player congregation in locations that are acoustically less sensitive.
Good design demonstrates an awareness of padel noise impacts and is increasingly expected by planning authorities. An experienced acoustic consultant should work alongside the architect to embed these principles from day one.
Barriers are effective—but only up to a point.
Their performance depends on height, location, sealing, and proximity to either the source or receiver. Barriers primarily reduce line‑of‑sight sound, meaning noise can diffract over and around them, particularly toward upper floors of nearby buildings.
Reflections are another consideration. Sound can be reflected between padel court walls, perimeter barriers and nearby buildings. On complex sites, predictive noise modelling is often required to ensure barriers provide benefit rather than unintended consequences.
Only marginally.
Vegetation can reduce visual impact and lighting effects, but its contribution to padel noise reduction is limited. Low‑frequency impact noise travels efficiently through foliage. Effective noise control requires mass and density—brick walls, purpose‑designed acoustic barriers, or heavy structures.
Roof structures can reflect sound back into the court, potentially reducing impacts at elevated receptors. However, reflected sound is usually redistributed laterally at ground level. Large roof spans may also introduce reverberance, increasing overall sound levels while softening impact sharpness. Roof mitigation must therefore be site‑specific and carefully assessed.
A Noise Management Plan (NMP).
Low‑cost, highly effective, and strongly favoured by local authorities. An NMP allows operators to manage noise proactively through scheduling, maintenance, and operational controls—ensuring mitigation remains effective over the life of the facility.

In 2024, we independently delivered the UK’s most comprehensive noise research into outdoor padel courts, incorporating nearly 50 hours of measured data. The findings now inform professional training delivered to local authorities and underpin predictive modelling used to support planning consent across the UK.
