
As padel continues its rapid expansion across the UK, one question appears increasingly frequently in planning applications, local authority consultations and online searches: Should UK padel noise assessments be based on BS4142 or the Dutch Padel Noise Guidance?
As noise consultants working on padel and sports planning developments across the UK, we are often asked whether the widely discussed Dutch guidance should be applied to British padel court developments. The short answer is generally no.
This article explains why.
BS4142 is the British Standard titled Methods for Rating and Assessing Industrial and Commercial Sound. It is one of the most widely used noise assessment methodologies in the UK planning system.

The standard’s scope includes manufacturing activities, fixed mechanical plant, loading operations and other commercial processes. Recreational activities are not its primary focus and it clearly states in the guidance it should not be used for recreational activities.
Padel is fundamentally a sporting and recreational activity.
While commercial padel facilities may operate as businesses, the acoustic events being assessed are generated by players participating in sport rather than industrial processes.
This distinction matters because the subjective perception of sports noise can differ significantly from plant noise, ventilation systems or industrial operations. Importantly, the weightings allocated to the specific noise characteristics are geared towards people’s perceptions of industrial noise, and perception of the noise is an important contributory factor in annoyance towards a noise.
The Dutch guidance, commonly referred to as “Padel and Noise”, was developed through collaboration between sports governing bodies, municipalities, acoustic specialists and stakeholder groups in response to rapid growth in padel courts across the Netherlands.

The most successful padel planning applications are those supported by transparent, technically robust and site-specific acoustic analysis. This approach gives planning authorities confidence, addresses community concerns and ultimately delivers better outcomes for everyone involved.
